spinning

For this technique, you will spin a racing stripe—a singles that is spun using a short backward (or forward) draw while wrapping it with a prespun yarn. The difference here is that a collection of foreign objects is suspended between your bobbin/cone of racing stripe on the floor and your front/drafting hand.

Join the fiber to the leader and begin spinning a racing stripe. When you are ready to insert a foreign object, reach down and grab one with your front/drafting hand (STEP 2). Bring it up to the drafting triangle and spin past it (STEP 3). Continue until you have filled the bobbin or run with fiber, racing stripe, or foreign objects. If the objects you are spinning in are small and light enough, you shouldn’t need to anchor them. If they are big and heavy, you should incorporate them more securely with the integrating technique (see page 65). There you have it: you’ve officially spun stuff into your handspun.
